Normans vs Byzantines

Lockdowns are finally over..so time for more games!! Ross threw his Byzantines into the path of my rampaging Normans. A good historical match that looked like it might go to the Normans in the early stages, but by mid game the tide had turned......but ended with both armies exhausted and over 50% casualties..so a bloody draw!

My mercenary foot moving against the Byzantine Skutatoi ( heavy infantry)

Norman center left - two units of my knights sorting out enemy units with unpronounceable names ( Trapezetoi, Clibanophoroi and Kataphractoi )

Norman right flank.
At the top center- two units of Normans have hit the kataphractoi- and one unit on the left against two kataphractoi. Norman crossbow and two last units in reserve in front of the Boss. (CinC)

The Norman right center- Hitting the Byzantine line.

Norman skirmishers- they would come out of the rough ground..shoot..and then evade back into the difficult terrain.

View of the table- Normans on the left- Byzantines on the right.

The Skutatoi vs Norman foot- The Norman foot held on...and held on....while the cavalry on the left did their job.....but it was too little too late.

The Norman Milites vs the Byzantine Clibanophoroi! The Normans did well, but these Byzantines are tough!

On the extreme Norman left- outnumbered, Richard put up a good fight and slowed them down as Paul and I tried to smash up the other flank.

Crossbowmen - support fire as the horsemen crash in.

Norman foot advance...

The Normans on the right center and right plough into the Kataphraktoi

The final turn- The Norman left had collapsed- the Byzantine left was gone...it was going to be two swinging gates

Archer firing at the Byzantine line.

The Right center Normans swing wide to get behind the Byzantine Skutatoi.

The Normans destroy their last opponents on their right...Go Paul!

Ross' (the Byzantine ) left flank on the final turn...no light cavalry, no heavy cavalry.....no infantry ...just a forlorn general lamenting the loss of his troops. It was on this side that the Normans  under Paul really caused havoc.

In the end we got to the Moral phase and both sides had lost 50%- so a losing draw....or a winning draw...depending on whose side you are on !!

    1. Thanks Matt- yes I think many gamers have or have had Byzantines at some stage. And if they don't- they've probably fought against them!
