RAPID FIRE- 20mm

Late last year, Richard put on a game with his outstanding 20mm WW2 collection of Rapid Fire - it was a scenario that called for a German Counter-attack during the early stages of the Normandy campaign by a Kampfgruppe of the 21st Panzer Division.

The scenario called for the Germans troops to get a vehicle and a set number of figures off the southern end of the table.

Ross and I ( as the Germans) decided to hit the forward British defences and once it was cleared make a break for the table's edge- Unfortunately it didn't go as planned ( what plan survives contact with the enemy?). We failed to clear the first village- and even if we had, allied reinforcements had arrived at the second defensive position in the shape of Sherman tanks- so we wouldn't have got past them anyway! The Allies (Richard) won the game!

Love this shot!

Black and white shot!

British defensive position

Here the Germans are hitting the village- you can see the line of German vehicle- and the Shermans arriving in the distance......and no chance of the Germans winning the game.

  1. Great looking game with a lot of super photos. As the German player, was this scenario naturally unwinnable?

    1. Jonathan, I'm interested to see what John says, but in hindsight it was a very hard goal for the Germans - but probably needed quite a lot of experience with the way the rules work to have that chance. Especially needed to move fast early on for the ultimate objectives.

    2. Thanks for your comments JF. Hey Rich, yeah it's a tough one for the Germans. As wargamers we tend to think in terms of a 'build-up' into the game. Launch our forces, then send the troops running for the table edge...but that failed. It seemed so counter-intuitive ( or just too 'gamey' to just put some figures in a vehicle and race them across the table from the get-go. But I figure that's probably the best course of action- and get everyone else to run a blocking defence if they can.

  4. Looks great as always John - 20mm is the PROPER scale for WWII gaming, I reckon - mind you, my most recent WWII painting efforts have been 15mm......! I particularly like the British infantry figures - are they AB Miniatures?
