Seven Years War- Another Day , Another Scenario...

For this game I took one of the old Table Top Teasers by Charles Grant and translated it to our rules and tabletop. This time there was no difference in quality of troops or commanders. Both sides had a Dashing commander, a Dependable commander and a Ditherer! (based on the command structure of Honours of War) As the vanguard of their respective armies the forces were composed of similar (identical!!) troop types.

Each side had six line infantry battalions, one light infantry battalion and three regiments of dragoons- all of the same quality. I am sure that this was historical....both sides exactly equal!!

The Teaser map from 1978. I added a couple of hills near each objective.

French Commander's Briefing

Austrian Commander's briefing

Message given to both commanders ( AFTER they deployed)

Initial deployment

Checking movement distances

Austrians

French in the far corner- Austrian light infantry ( Grenzers) running towards the town- they rolled a 6 which gave them a double move- crucial to getting there before the French. Their French counterparts rolled 1....and stayed put.

Early orders- The French commander (Ross) decided to stick to his orders and hold his primary objective
The Austrian commander ( Paul) decided to spread himself and go for both

First Austrian Brigade goes forward and deploys

Second one heads to the hill overlooking the river crossing

Dragoons moving forward

The French get to the hill overlooking the town first.....

The Lines form

The Austrians in line (nicely done Paul!) and anchor their right flank on the town- which is held by the Grenzers

Both sides shaking into line.

Austrian Grenzers holding the French objective. This was one of the key factors in the final Austrian victory. At the very start of the game- the Grenzers rolled 'admirable' move and got a double go. The French rolled the dreaded '1' for poor and failed to move in the first turn.

Grenzers holding off the French advance

Austrians on the left, French on the right. In the distance the Austrians have secured their objective of the river crossing which was never really threatened by the French.

Dragoons clash

Austrians pushing forward- on the far hill , the French would drive them off the ground but run out of time to push onto the town. The cavalry clash in the center left of the picture shows the French Dragoons being beaten and forced back.

Fight for the heights dominating the town. Austrians barely hanging on....and eventually pushed back in the last turn of the game

Austrian Dragoons pushing the French back! French light infantry in the middle of the field- unsupported.

The Austrian Objective- secure!

Final positions- The French hemmed into their almost original deployment - with both key objectives held by the Austrians!

A fun game that ended in victory for the Army of Maria Therese....and Ross asking if anyone was interested in doing Prussians or Russians!!
