As part of my WIP for the battle of Vienna I have the forces for many of the conflicts of the same time. Looking at "A Taste of Victory" from Barry Hilton, who is one of my favourite 'dealers of product', I realised could play one of the games described in the book. One of the scenarios is the battle of Kalamata, fought in the Peloponnese during the Morea War when Venice took the region from the Ottoman Empire.

My layout- the picture is not a good one as the Saxons aren't included and the Ottomans facing them are not in it either! |

The scenario book! |
The briefing called for the Venetian commander to enter the Ottoman camp and destroy the Ottoman army. This had to be accomplished in 12 turns.
The few mounted troops- some dragoons on the Venetian left flank. Saxon infantry behind them. The Elector of Saxony had been hired out ot the Venetians to help them conquer the Morea ( The Peloponnese). Besides the Venetian regiments there was also a contingent of hired regiments from Hanover and the Venetians also recruited Greeks from the southern Peloponnese - the famed Maniates. |

The Ottoman position. |
Inside the Ottoman camp. |
Ottoman infantry waiting behind their field fortifications. |
Janissaries in the field works |
Ottoman gun - awaiting the assault. |
The Saxon contingent driving the Ottoman infantry back after an Ottoman charge. Hot work in a Greek summer...Ouzo anyone?? |
The Venetian commander making sure that he kept up pressure all along the line simultaneously.
It took a couple of hours to play and in the end it was resounding ( historical) victory.
The Venetian forces shattered the Ottoman defenders, and by turn 9 ( out of 12 turn game) were forcing their way into the Ottoman camp. I think I am going to try this again.
