American War of Independence - Solo effort

 

Lockdown again...solo effort..again.
Somewhere in the Carolinas.........

This was a simple game played on a small table in over a couple of hours. A British column, advancing thru an abandoned plantation was ambushed by a Rebel force.

The Redcoats had two regular battalions, a detachment of Light Troops and a detachment of Tarleton's Legion on foot. One Artillery piece filled out the redcoat force. The Rebels had two militia battalions, three unit of riflemen and two guns.

A simple job for the Patriots- inflict casualties on the British column and force them to retreat. The British, who had been chasing the rebels now have an opportunity to smash the troublesome Americans!

The second Patriot gun. This was on the far American left in 'hidden' mode and would be a nasty surprise to the redcoats who tried to flank the American line.

The Light Bobs move thru the orchard, fighting the minutemen.  This tussle was quite gritty as the Light Bobs tried to drive the Virginians out.

The Light troops finally win the orchard- but are being fired on from two sides.

On the British left, the Legion drives the riflemen back.

The 23rd Foot- Royal Welch Fusiliers- in column- to realise there was an American gun to their front. 

The 'hidden' gun rolls forward- and fires canister - into the light troops, causing frightful casualties.

Finally win- by pushing the back....militia unit waiting to give a volley.

The American gun on the flank- would cause damage..but my randomised card reaction system- when British light troops got near them- they fired into the flank of the Redcoats- and then limbered up and left the battle!

The gun and all the infantry concentrate fire on the Continentals who are defending the abandoned house.

The Continentals withdraw and the Legion move in. Victory for the forces of George III,

Overall a great little battle. The British didn't feed their units in gradually as they arrived- they waited till they had everything on table, deployed, then advanced.  The Americans put up a good fight, inflicting some serious casualties.  But, not enough,  to win the day.

  2. Looks like a fun game - did you use some kind of "AI" for one side or did you just paly each side as well as you could and let the dice decide the outcome of firing and combats? I tried some solo gaming when I was a teenager but it always felt like I had a "favourite" side that I wanted to win! The figures and terrain look great by the way!

    1. Hi Keith- I have a system of card. I actually played the Redcoats. The card have things like 'stand and fight', 'retreat one move' etc. Each turn I select at random (face down) from 4 or 5 that are probable course of action. For example the first militia unit had just two possible actions. Four cards said 'stand' and one said 'retreat' ( for 1 turn) for the first three turns as the British approached. Picking one randomly - they were able to stand. The Continentals had 3 cards for 'stand' and 2 for advance for the first three turns. And in the second and third turns 'advance' came up. This doesn't negate any reaction tests- it just provides a framework for their move. Units will shoot and melee automatically. The Patriot gun had a 'retreat' in it's cards...which came up just when the Americans needed it most. And i threw a direction dice to see where they limbered up and moved- off the table...damn!!

  5. Really enjoyed this AAR. I've been painting many of those same units in 15mm during the lockdown. Hopefully, next year I can make it back to Sydney and join another great game in your garage!
