Spanish vs Maximilian's Imperials

The Spanish came out to do battle with the knights and landsknechts of Maximilian. Lots of pike, heavy knights, men with crossbows, arquebus and other inventive ways of killing each other.

My Spanish pikemen

Maximilian on the left, my Spanish on the right.

The plans. Mine in red and Ross' Maximilian's in blue.
1+2) My lights and heavies were to go straight forward. A couple of my lights intended to work their way through the woods on the extreme flank.
3) My pike block going forward to block the cavalry
4) Ross' pikes coming forward to hit my field fortifications
5+6) Ross's pikes and heavies on his left going forward to smash my flank

My right flank- lights and sword and buckler men.

My center- El Gran Capitan- Gonsalvo de Cordoba would be proud- nice field fortifications manned by Spanish Arquebus.

My right.

Now that's some good shooting.

Ross attached his commander and charged my sword and buckler men who were on a hill.

My bombard....with a great target....the Landsknecht pike block!!!

My pike blocks forcing Ross'  knights back.

Hits on a 6 or double 5 ( not Impetus rules, but home grown set using some Impetus mechanisms)

My pike , supported by knights charging forward, rolling well and causing mayhem

When we got to the morale calculation phase, both armies by turn 6 had lost over 50% and the result was a bloody draw.
I don't know how people feel about 'draws'.
When we debrief we discuss the tactical situation- in this case although both armies , under the rules, should "withdraw", often one player may have a tactical advantage over the other but the rules require a halt.
These results often reflect incredibly close fought games. Enjoyable even though there was no clear 'winner'! In fact some of the games I remember best are these very close fought ones.

  1. Another inspirational Wargaming spectacle. Where do you source your Spanish troops?
