Solo WSS- Louis' Army holds the line

I put some of my WSS through their paces the other day, using the scenario 'Flank attack' . A Brigade of French Horse ( 4 Squadrons) a Brigade of Foot ( 4 Battalions) and a small Dragoon Brigade ( 2 Squadrons) were tasked with holding a small line of hills that controlled a major road. The Dutch were to drive the French from their position ..and they had the added advantage of a Foot Brigade of 3 Battalions of Foot that had moved into position on the exposed flank of the defending French.

In double line-  Dutch Horse Regiment Nassau- Saarebruk and beyond them Regt Du Wurtemburg

French Horse Regt La Reine

La Reine, waiting patiently.

The French Line; , Regt Bourbon 2 Battalions. ( Blue/red/blk/yellow Flag). Black quartered Flag in the distance,  2 Battalions of Regt Piemont

The Dutch flanking force

Dutch Regt Schlangenburg appearing behind the French

Dutch Regt Nassau Friesland moving into position to appear on the flank of the French Dragoons

French Horse, Foot and Dragoons about facing as the small Dutch gun deployed and started blasting away.

French Regt Piemont....rear battalion about facing as they take a casualty from the small Dutch gun behind them

The French Regt of Horse Narbonne, about face to deal with the threat behind them

1) 1 Squadron Regt La Reine moving to the threat from the rear
2) French Regiment of Foot Bourbon ( 2 Battalions) and the other Squadron of La Reine ( to the left) hold the hill
3) Horse Regiment Narbonne about faces and moves to the rear.
4) Dutch Horse finding it difficult to dislodge the French infantry - Dutch Foot Regt Pallandt                 supporting them.
5) French Dragoon Regiment Firmacon covering itself in glory ( see below)
6) Dutch infantry Regt Schlangenburg heading the flanking column.

Well.....you sometimes get a result that just defies the odds. One Squadron of the Firmacon Dragoons charged the Dutch Regt Van Beynheym frontally. ....normally not a smart thing to do.....The Dutch get to fire...6D6 plus another two for 'first fire'. They need 5+ to hit. they also get a reroll for one miss due to their 'platoon fire'.  They scored 1 hit and nothing on the reroll.  Sh*t.
The French Dragoons easily pass the test ( with only 1 hit there was a chance that they could fail ) and charge home. In melee they have 3D6 with an extra for the charge...so 4D6 hitting on a 3+. The Dutch have 6D6 hitting on a 4+.........The Dutch got one hit.....the Dragoons were successful with every dice....the Dutch broke.... and in the pursuit were caught by the Dragoons and destroyed.....*&^&^%%!!!!!. On the balance of probability the Dutch should not have lost...in fact they should have blasted the Dragoons out of their saddles.......but sh*t happens...the commander of the French dragoons should be made a Marshal of France......it wasn't a good result for the Dutch! That then led to a Brigade test.....and two out of the three remaining Regiments failed...one needing only 5+ on 2d6...and getting the dreaded snake eyes.

a

Last charge of the game........if it worked for the French Dragoons why not for the charging Dutch......
well, sadly it didn't......they had failed their charge home test.......

In the end, the Dutch primary force failed to significantly hold the French main line. In fact, the attacking Dutch infantry fell back in disorder allowing the French commander to then deal with the flanking force.

A victory for the force of the Sun king!!

  1. A fun report. I like the simplicity of the road!
Using the Charles S. Grant rules here?

    1. Thanks Jennifer! The road is just an appropriate coloured piece of fabric..easy to use and store! ( Cheap too!). The rules are a home grown set that I use. Fast, bloody and unforgiving.

  2. This is great, and inspiring, John. You're made me consider doing a few solo games myself in the future.

    1. Hey Dean- thank you. It's my way of dealing with insomnia...nothing like getting the troops out at 2:30am I'm done by the time the sun comes up!

    1. Thanks Keith...yes my games have a habit of going against the better troops recently....they had Shock Horse and Platoon Firing infantry...on paper all a touch better than the French...but it wasn't their day.

  4. Lovely sized action - as for the dragoons, the dice have told the story.

On a random note Jonathan Freitag of Palouse Wargaming Journal pointed me in your direction as I am trying to give away 28mm Assyrians and he thought that you might be interested. Have a look on my blog, My Wargaming Habit, and let me know if you want them.
