I have been slowly working away at the Saxons for the Great Northern War.
I originally started with 70 odd figures from the Front Rank late 17th Century range that was going to be for another project.
But one day I decided to paint up some GNW Saxons (see past post!) and got four regiments. Flags were from my favourite dealer of product, Barry Hilton at Warfare Miniatures.
Earlier this year I bought some more Front Rank and began painting to add more. The Saxons are a nice army- and sooner or later I am going to have to put them on the table against the Swedes!
I had some more flags and began to put them on. I now have 9 regiments of infantry. Time to do some cavalry!
I enjoy painting these guys and am very happy with the results!
Thielau's Regiment of Foote. |
Kurprinz Dragoons |
....and again |
Six of the infantry regiments. (Next to the Russians). |
These guys still need to be flocked. The Regiment at the back is the Saxon Guards. One in front is Weimar's Regiment. |
Got to get some cuirassiers too!
Lovely stuff John - always liked FR and they are still excellent figures - you will need A LOT of them to take on the Swedes though, based on my reading about the period! (Did the Saxons ever beat the Swedes??)
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith- yes I am going to need a lot- BUT I can add in Russian, Danish, Polish or Prussian allies as these all fought alongside the Saxons at various stages throughout the GNW. In the early period I can't think of any notable victories by the Saxons...except Kalisz where they had Polish and Russian allies..... that said there are a lot of defeats..some very humiliating; Kliszow, Fraustadt, Duna, Grodno....there is a long list!
DeleteIt's not until 1713 or so that you start to get some Saxon victories- but they were nearly always with allies.
Great stuff. The Saxons are my favourite army of the period
ReplyDeleteThanks Neil- yes the Saxons have their own charm!
